Home Business Zoning Regulations

In August, supervisors expressed concerns that the ordinance was outdated and unfairly preventing some businesses from operating in the home. As written, the regulations (for instance) did not allow the likes of Mary Kay or Avon cosmetics' salespeople to conduct business from their residence, but at the same time gave an attorney the ability to hold consultations with clients in the home.

Microsoft Small Business Summit - Never Eat Alone

Best selling author, Keith Ferrazzi was the final keynote speaker at Microsoft's Small Business Summit. Here are the highlights from my notes:

  • There should be no distinction between personal and business relationships.
  • Joy can live with success.
  • Skip the small talk and talk with people about passion, dreams and the future.
  • Intimacy (a deep mutual understanding) is the core of success.
  • Have a willingness to share who you are.
  • Make business human.
  • Create an environment around yourself that allows others to share a dream.
  • You've got to be human to be trusted.
  • Talk about your struggles.
  • A willingness to share makes people care about you.
  • FOCUS - Be clear about what you want to achieve.
  • Define your currency. What do you have to give to others?
  • Give a gift that can change a person's world.
  • Bond with people. Go Deep.
  • Build a network before you need it.

Keith was by far the highlight of the summit for me and judging by the standing ovation he got at the end of his speech, I was not alone in this thinking. I was also able to spend a few moments with him afterwords and noticed him take a sincere interest in the people he was speaking with.

The world of networking needs more Keith Ferrazzi.

You can visit Keith's blog here and buy his book here.

Microsoft Small Business Summit - Maxine Clark

Here are the highlights from the notes I took from Build-A-Bear CEO, Maxine Clark’s keynote address at Microsoft's Small Business Summit:

- The American Dream is alive and well.
- Retailing is entertainment. When the customer is having fun, they spend more money.
- Connect (with) and engage your customers.
- Make the customer more important than the deal.
- Have a purpose behind the sale.
- Have a detailed business plan - a moving and fluid document.
- Nay sayers can give you determination.
- Take the opportunity to connect with your customers in a unique way.
- Fill a void or need in the marketplace.

Blogging - Microsoft's Small Business Summit

I had the opportunity to be among the live audience of 300-400 small business owners for today's portion of the Microsoft Small Business Summit. The Microsoft Small Business Summit will continue for the next 3 days through a series webinars that can be found at the Microsoft Small Business Summit Site.

Here are the highlights from a Microsoft product perspective:

1. Microsoft lowered the extended financing for complete IT solutions from $10,000 to $3,000.

2. Microsoft unveiled Small Business Server 2003 R2. From the press release: SBS 2003 R2 also includes increased mailbox size limits -- more than 1 GB per user -- and SQL Server(TM) 2005 Workgroup Edition technology for SBS 2003 R2 Premium Edition.

3. Microsoft Point of Sale (retail software) is now available on shelves at 115 Best Buy for Business outlets nationwide. The Geek Squad helped demo this product.

Microsoft COO, Kevin Turner was adament about their commitment to small business. Apparently this was Kevin's first "performance" since coming on board at Microsoft, having previously been CEO of Sam's Club. I thought he did a good job of relating to the small business owners in the audience, by sharing a story about his wife's small business.

I should also mention that I was treated pretty darn well. Breakfast, lunch, 2 t-shirts, a portfolio, a book, and over $600 worth of Microsoft software is a pretty good trade for a little over three hours of my time.

I will be posting seperate entries about the other two keynote speakers, Maxine Clark, Founder and CEO of Build-A-Bear and Keith Ferrazzi of Ferrazzi Greenlight and author of the best selling book, 'Never Eat Alone'.

The Next Millionaires

Paul Zane Pilzer:

The Next Millionaires explains in detail why the 21st century will be known as the age of the entrepreneur, and how you can stake your claim to being one of these next 10 million millionaires--especially if you are in direct selling, technology, home-based business, product distribution, or an emerging trillion-dollar industry like wellness. It explains how old models of opportunity in physical distribution have given way to new opportunities in intellectual distribution, defined as teaching people about products or services that they didn't even know exist. And, drawing on Pilzer's 33 years of experience as an entrepreneur and employer, it explains how to use your past to find your place in the new economy and your ticket to becoming one of The Next Millionaires.
